reminiscing the good old days:
the nostalgia in summer photographs
In every narrative, be it in a book, movie, or otherwise, nothing is as important as its setting. In it, the story unfolds, revealing its mysteries, intrigues, and romances. Sometimes, the setting tells more about the story than the characters in it—be it The Shire in The Lord of the Rings, portraying the naivety and carefreeness of its small inhabitants, or Akira's Neo-Tokyo, a larger-than-life, neon-covered metropolis where crime runs rampant and social disparities are amplified by its authoritarian, progress-focused government. The setting of a story is key to building up the mood and atmosphere.
Em toda narrativa, seja em um livro, filme ou qualquer outra mídia, nada é tão importante quanto o cenário. Nele, a história se desenrola, revelando seus mistérios, intrigas e romances. Às vezes, o cenário conta mais sobre a história do que os próprios personagens—seja O Condado, em O Senhor dos Anéis, retratando a ingenuidade e despreocupação de seus pequenos habitantes, ou a Neo-Tóquio de Akira, uma metrópole grandiosa e coberta de neon, onde o crime corre solto e as disparidades sociais são ampliadas por um governo autoritário e obcecado pelo progresso. O cenário de uma história é essencial para construir o clima e a atmosfera.
Be it New York or Paris in a romcom, or Japan's countryside, where spirits of the forest come out at night to teach us about our impact on the environment and how we cannot live without it, few settings are as effective in portraying nostalgia as a place bathed in summer’s sun. It is in summer that we create most of our best memories—school vacations, long days at the beach, family trips, summer romances; the carefree moments that stay with us forever.
Seja Nova York ou Paris em uma comédia romântica, ou o interior do Japão, onde espíritos da floresta aparecem à noite para nos ensinar sobre o impacto que causamos no meio ambiente e como não podemos viver sem ele, poucos cenários são tão eficazes em retratar a nostalgia quanto um lugar banhado pelo sol do verão. É no verão que criamos a maioria das nossas melhores lembranças—férias escolares, longos dias na praia, viagens em família, romances de verão; momentos despreocupados que ficam conosco para sempre.
As a kid, summer for me meant visiting my grandma, grandpa, and aunt in the south. The days were long, almost never-ending. There was nothing to worry about other than having fun. My grandma would dress us up as ninjas, my grandpa would make us bats to play cricket, and by the end of the day, we would fall asleep as fast as counting to three.
Nostalgia is a curious feeling. It makes us contemplate how great things have been, even though we weren’t aware at the time. A great quote from Andy Bernard comes to mind: "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them."
Quando criança, verão, para mim, significava visitar minha avó, meu avô e minha tia no sul. Os dias eram longos, quase intermináveis. Não havia nada com que me preocupar além de me divertir. Minha avó nos vestia de ninjas, meu avô fazia tacos de madeira para jogarmos, e no fim do dia, dormíamos tão rápido quanto contar até três.
A nostalgia é um sentimento curioso. Ela nos faz refletir sobre como as coisas foram boas, mesmo que, na época, não tivéssemos essa percepção. A fala de Andy Bernard me vem à mente: "Queria que houvesse um jeito de saber que estamos vivendo os bons tempos antes de realmente deixá-los."
There's a little bit of nostalgia in all of us, and photography is my way of expressing mine in a way that only summer can portray. The warm colors and pastel tones help me preserve the aspects of memories I love most. They bring me back to a time when things were easier and days were longer.
Spring is here and, with it, the anticipation of another summer filled with new memories waiting to be made. I hope to one day look back at these pictures and feel the same emotions I had when I took them—or at least remember how great things were, and how the good old days are still happening, as the sun sets and a new day begins.
Há um pouco de nostalgia em todos nós, e a fotografia é a minha forma de expressar a minha, de um jeito que só o verão poderia retratar. As cores quentes e os tons pastel me ajudam a preservar os aspectos das memórias que mais amo. Eles me levam de volta a um tempo em que tudo parecia mais fácil e os dias eram mais longos.
A primavera chegou e, com ela, a expectativa por mais um verão repleto de novas memórias esperando para serem criadas. Espero que um dia eu possa olhar para essas fotos e sentir as mesmas emoções que senti ao tirá-las—ou, pelo menos, lembrar o quanto as coisas foram incríveis e como os bons e velhos tempos ainda estão acontecendo, enquanto o sol se põe e um novo dia começa.
